Nurturing everything from cherries and peaches to grapes, flowers and trees, farmers in West Kelowna have been providing Western Canada with farm fresh produce for generations. The historic Westbank Centre area is where many of the farms can be found and if you are wishing to sample the bounty, the Westside Farm Loop or the Westbank Farmers’ Market is the perfect place to start.
Each Saturday during July and August and into September the Westbank Farmers’ Market, held in the Westbank Centre features organic farmers, flower vendors, crafters, artisans, bakers, handmade jams and fresh produce. The markets is wholesome and personable with live music playing in the background while vendors share baking tips and their favourite local spots.
One of the simplest pleasures in the Okanagan is biting into a warm juicy peach or a fresh crisp apple that has been picked right from the tree. Don’t take our word for it, but honestly, you will never taste a better piece of fruit than one that has been freshly plucked from a tree. Tour the Westside Farm Loop and look for the numbered rooster signs, where you will find u-pick farms as well as fruit stands with fruit and fresh produce already picked and waiting for you.
The bounty is plentiful in West Kelowna where one can find fresh blueberries, peaches, blackberries, cherries, apples, apricots and pears, as well as heirloom tomatoes, greens, veggies, honey, woodfire bread, and wine. It is home to the oldest working nut farm in BC, Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park, as well as multiple family farms. What they all have in common is a love of their land, a passion for their produce and a strong believe in the ‘farm fresh way’.
