Farming Excellence in Westbank with the Stewart Family

The Stewart family has been farming in Westbank since 1908 as a multi generational family now entering the 5th generation. Ben’s grandfather, Richard Stewart, worked at the Gellatly Nut farm for David Gellatly. It was his early work in Ireland for Lord Guinness in Connemara which lead him to being an inquisitive and extremely successful horticulturist. His son Richard Jr. was equally interested in horticulture and was the pioneer grape grower in Westbank in 1956, acquiring the land on Mt. Boucherie where Quails’ Gate Estate Winery is today. Ben Stewart, founder of Quails’ Gate, will cover the trials and tribulations of the multi-generational family operation, the continuously changing landscape of grape varieties and producing world renowned wines.
